Banks deploy RFID in data center

We've certainly spent a lot of time discussing financial services data centers. Increasingly, they are a strategic imperative--the new everything. So it makes sense to stay as organized as possible, something that grows more difficult as the data center grows more complex. Unsurprisingly, some banks are turning to RFID to help with hardware inventory management.

ComputerWorld offers an interesting anecdote about how employees of a Wells Fargo data center used to line up at the end of a day so a guard could verify the serial number of everyone's take-home laptop. RFID was able to eliminate that tedious, daily ritual. According to the Financial Services Technology Consortium, financial institutions that use RFID technologies can cut the time it takes to inventory IT assets by 90 percent. This is a movement that is just getting underway, as the big vendors tailor solutions to data centers. Financial services firms are definitely among the early adopters. Bank of America is among the leaders. Last year the company switched to RFID from bar code technology, in 17 data centers. Another benefit: If a bank takes part in a merger, the integration process would be that much easier if both sides could instantly take inventory of their assets.
