A bio twist in the quant movement
"Computers and data are smarter than people," says Colin Hill, the physicist who founded Gene Network Sciences, which is best known for its use of supercomputers to help drug companies devise new products. He goes even further, telling Forbes, "We believe the economy and the financial system are governed by complex networks, just like the genes that control cells and the neurons that control brains. And we believe that, using artificial intelligence, we can start to extract that circuitry from raw data."
GNS has spun off Fina Technologies to pursue these market opportunities. It's goal is to replace the quants with supercomputers. The system has been tried on a quant model of gas prices that proved right 40 percent of the time, while the GNS system was right nearly 80 percent of the time.
