If you enter the Bank of America headquarters in Charlotte, N.C., chances are your eyes will be scanned biometrically by technology created by Global Rainmakers, a biometric security firm known for its high-speed iris scan systems. Thousands of people per day are scanned as they enter the building. And more biometric implementations may be on the way, says Securities Technology Monitor.

Tech Imagine, for example, recently announced its intention to sell its iris scans to its customer base, which includes Citibank and Banco Santander. The company is thinking big. They're betting that banks will soon start using the technology to identify customers at and in bank branches. They also think the technology is perfect for cell phones to secure mobile transactions and payments.

Frost & Sullivan predicts the financial services industry will spend nearly $100 million on biometrics this year, focused mainly on voice and fingerprint applications. Through 2016, it expects an annual growth rate of nearly 20 percent.

The issue is how much of that pie can retina and iris scans commandeer. We'll just have to see. Global Rainmankers thinks the trend is just starting.
