Case study: Community banks and mobile services

So how can a small bank stand out these days? Technology may be one answer. There was a day, not too long ago, when we assumed that the big banks only had the means to create the type of leading-edge services that would put local competitors to shame. But Jackson, MS-based BankPlus would beg to differ, especially when it comes to mobile apps. The bank launched an m-banking offering in February 2008, and already 10 percent of the bank's online customers have adopted the service, notes Bank Systems & Technology. That translates into about 3,000 customers. That's 3,000 more than a lot of big regional banks. This is frankly just one of several savvy techno-moves spearheaded by Dave McLeod, EVP and chief technology officer. Virtualization is next on the list. In the end, the bank is like its bigger peers in this regard: it is still searching for a way to monetize m-applications.
