Dark pools stand as a great example of the good and the bad of technology. There are now more than 40 such pools, and according to the Tabb Group, they account for 10 percent of all trading. While that number will continue to rise, the jungle of dark pools is only getting thicker. The buyside is having an increasingly frustrating time with all the options. The latest twist: Financial News Online reports Morgan Stanley has launched NightOwl, a service that will allow access to dark and light pools. Other broker dealers are following suit. So the options for customers are increasing, and that's a good thing. The issue remains: There needs to be better tools to help clients navigate the maze of offerings out there, and to assure them that no one is gaming the system.
