Deutsche Bank's carbon counter and widget

Carbon Counter

Deutsche Bank, with help from MIT, has launched a very high-profile carbon counter, a giant billboard in New York City that constantly displays emissions data in real time. The public can access this information on a companion website and can even download a widget displaying the carbon counter on their desktop.

It reminds me of the federal deficit counter that displayed our mounting debts back in the 1980s and 1990s. Of course Deutsche Bank is also attempting to drum up awareness of its research offering and investment opportunities in various green initiatives. From a marketing perspective, this seems to be a near-home run judging from all the media coverage. The widget may also prove to be a hit; it certainly can't hurt to have your brand on key executives' desktops. Certainly, all this could tie in with whatever green data center initiatives the bank may have underway.
