Flash orders in the options market?
We've noted often that innovations in the equities market have migrated over to the options market in important ways, decimalization, alternative trading venues, for example. Are we seeing it again? While the idea of a ban on flash orders is taking root in the stock market execution ecosystem, some indeed think it ought to take root as well in the options market, notes Trading.
Flash orders have existed in the options market since 2004, and a number of exchanges have made the practice fairly common. There is a case to be made for these orders in options. Notably, exchanges can reduce fees for the customers and keep business in house by allowing them to execute at the flash price. But you get the idea that no one in the industry is willing to put up a huge fight to defend an order type that accounts for little volume. The political pound of flesh just wouldn't be worth it.
