Jon Corzine may avoid criminal charges

The rumor mill says that Jon Corzine has fled to the Hampons--the playground of the rich--seeking refuge from the MF Global controversy, which imploded in scandal this year.

According to the New York Post, "Corzine, 65, was looking worn out and gaunt earlier this week as he trudged along Main Street in East Hampton on his way back from the local Starbucks. With an oversized sweatshirt and baggy jeans, the stressed-out former governor of New Jersey looked as if he was on his way to a dental appointment instead of a relaxing evening."

The Post suggests that he's persona non grata these days in the Hamptons, "not getting the sort of invitations he would have gotten before."

If Corzine is in a funk because of social snubs, that would tell how far the MF Global investigations have come, which is to say, not very far.

The ex-CEO of MF Global's big worry ought to be the threat of prosecution, but if he has the time and inclination to cavort in the Hamptons--"residents have spotted him in his favorite haunts, such as Nick and Toni's restaurant in East Hampton and the American Hotel restaurant in Sag Harbor"--that means that he's probably in the clear. He would not appear to be a man spending every hour working on his defense.

At this point, charges against him would appear to be a long shot. However, it remains to be seen whether information from key figures who have been negotiating immunity will change the game.
