New ATM trick: False keyboard

We noted recently that ATM thieves are getting a lot more sophisticated, and more reports are cropping up of even harder to detect hardware and Bluetooth strategies. Fraudulent add-on devices are nothing new. We noted last week that one tool was a small camera that recorded keystrokes as you entered a PIN and a clunky device to capture account info.

A more recent innovation is the use of a fake keypad that doesn't require a small camera; some banks advised people cover their fingers as they entered their PIN. The fake keyboard captures the PIN and transmits via Bluetooth to a mobile phone. The thieves do not have to be anywhere close; they could be in another country. Australian PC Authority calls this the "Holy Grail" of ATM skimming techniques. So far, we haven't seen this crop up in the United States, but we might soon. Solution providers will likely adjust their offerings.
