New method to measure latency

How accurate do your latency measures have to be? Measurement is no small task these days. Milliseconds make all the difference between the success and failure of a trade. Lots of bragging rights are on the line.

Securities Industry News notes an interesting development: Scientists from the University of California, San Diego and Purdue University are touting a new, cost-efficient mechanism for measuring latency down to tens of microseconds and losses as infrequent as one in a million. The idea here is that this system could be incorporated in routers and provide a low-cost alternative to the external latency monitoring boxes currently used by technology vendors.

The purveyors argue that some companies would be happy to live with a very slight reporting delay, given the cost advantages. We'll see if any of the big router companies start offering this as an option. One gets the feeling that it will not happen anytime soon.
