One way to goose mobile payments

There's some palpable frustration in some quarters of the nascent online financial universe over the pace of mobile payments adoption. Card companies, various technology vendors and perhaps a few banks think the world is ready for mobile payments, despite the fact that phone companies have yet to integrate the technology into handsets.

To that end, some companies are promoting "Go-Tag" stickers, which can be stuck onto handsets and used as payment swiping systems at retail checkouts, reports Bank Technology News. The hope is that these stickers will stoke demand, which will prompt phone makers and network operators to move faster on deployment. 

First Data is among the leaders. The stickers will be linked to a prepaid account and sold along with a conventional card. First Data also plans to seek out some bank partners to issue the stickers with cards. We'll see if this has legs in the U.S. The biggest ongoing test, by Visa, is now taking place in Malaysia , involving a large Malaysian bank.
