Remote capture trend in the making?

We've talked a lot about using smartphones and devices to deposit money in banks, and we're seeing more activity generally. ClairMail, for example, has just announced it will launch such a service with Mitek Systems.

The solution would rely on Mitek's Mobile Deposit to allow customers to deposit checks by taking a picture of the checks with their phones and sending the image to banks. It's unclear how fast this will develop. Bank of America said it is evaluating the technology.

The biggest program up and running may be at USAA Federal Savings Bank, an Internet-based institution that primarily targets military families. Since the launch of its remote deposit feature in August, more than 300,000 members have downloaded USAA's iPhone application from Apple's App Store. This is part of the bank's efforts to make mobile banking a central aspect of the USAA experience. But it remains to be seen how quickly this will develop in the banking industry as a whole.
