Remote deposit and P2P: Killer mobile apps?

Are remote check deposit for the masses and person-to-person payments poised to become the first true killer of financial applications for the mobile Web? A significant boost may be coming in the form of JPMorgan Chase's (JPM) new mobile services, which as of this month features new remote deposit and P2P services, both for iPhones and iPads.

The remote deposit service allows customers to take a picture of a check and deposit it by sending it to the bank. We've been talking about this for a while, but a rollout by a mega bank is big moment. The top banks may have been emboldened by the experience of USAA, which now says that 35 percent of all checks are deposited via its Deposit@Mobile service. Since the service started less than a year ago, more than 1.5 million checks were deposited, worth nearly $1 billion. Of course, USAA only has one physical branch.

As for P2P, it may take off a bit more slowly. Still, a survey from Fiserv last year found that about 35 percent of online bill-pay users said they would use a P2P payment service in a typical month We're likely to see more banks integrate these services into their mobile offerings. The likes of Citigroup and Fiserv have observed as much, according to the American Banker.
