Say goodbye to the CheckFree name

CheckFree has been around forever, or so it seems. But the name will disappear soon as Fiserv plans retire the name--long recognized as an electronic bill payment pioneer--in favor of the parent company's, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. This is right after the CheckFree product was honored as the top online banking provider for the third year in a row. The 2007 merger of the two companies created something of a powerhouse. But two years later, you have to wonder how the company will weather the storm that has engulfed the financial services industry.

Fiserv, which reported a 30 percent profit jump in 2007, thinks that its outsourcing and other recurring revenue business are poised to do well, as banks mull ways to cut costs and gain efficiencies. That said, there could be short-term pains inflicted upon the company, as the on-going bailout settles. 

"I've never seen, in my business history, a year where we've gotten this deep into the year and we have this high number of companies, including financial services companies, that don't yet have a budget for this year because they don't know who is going to be buying from them," Pete Kight, of Fiserv, tells the AJC
