Sergey Aleynikov charged
Not too long ago, things were looking up for Sergey Aleynikov, 40, who was arrested last year after Goldman Sachs, his former employer, turned him in to authorities, alleging theft of code critical to the firm's high-frequency trading software. He is said to have transferred code to his personal computer and non-Goldman Sachs servers upon his resignation from the firm. He had accepted a job at Teza Technologies that apparently paid quite well.
The conventional wisdom has been that the case was weak, given a lack of evidence that he sought to profit from the code. Some thought a deferred prosecution would be agreed upon. But, in a twist, the U.S. Attorney in Manhattan has filed charges against Aleynikov. According to media reports, he was indicted on three counts--theft of trade secrets, cross-border transport of stolen property, and unauthorized computer access. He faces up to 25 years in prison.
