Small banks respond to security threats

Most of the big phishing attacks we've discussed recently involve big institutions, but small banks have felt the threat as well, reports Bank Systems & Technology. And some experts discern a trend toward more small-bank attacks. This summer, several small banks issued website alerts, warning customers of phishing attempts directed at them. One targeted firm, a small New England bank, had less than $500 million in assets. In some cases, the attacks can come via a service bureau, Calif.-based Digital Insight.

The perception may be that small banks have invested less in security and thus may be more vulnerable. But the industry seems bent on counteracting such notions. A recent survey found that securing customer data will be the top priority of community banks over the next several years. The survey also found that the smallest banks are the most worried about attacks.
