Back in December, then-Citi Chief Information Officer Marvin Adams decamped for Fidelity Investments. No one could blame any top exec for leaving a troubled company for greener pastures. His replacement: Marty Lippert, who was tapped as CIO and corporate operations and technology chief operating officer. Would you want this job? Citigroup is ailing. That's no secret. Lippert will likely find himself in a constrained budgetary environment, which may limit change. Then again, in such situations, heroes are made. Citi however seems to be acknowledging that technology can be a key driver of resurgence--what CEO Vikram Pandit boasts will be one of the greatest turnarounds in U.S. corporate history. (He's not known for trash talking) To that end, the real pressure may be on Deborah Hopkins, who was named to the new position of Chief Innovation Officer in May. Her task: to "bring together the strategy, information technology, and research and development to drive cross-business, client-focused innovation across the company." That's been something of a Holy Grail at Citi for years. Hopefully, it will become reality. Good luck.
